‘Override’ word broached at School Committee meeting

05/23/2012

CLINTON —

The public hearing on the school budget Tuesday night was pretty sedate, as school officials reviewed the budget approved by the School Committee several weeks ago, knowing that town officials had favored a budget that leaves the schools $1 million in the red.

Only at the end of the meeting did the dreaded “O” word get spoken, when School Committee member Robert Ebstein raised the question.

“I understand an override is a pariah, but the budget we asked is being reduced over $1 million,” Ebstein said. “That is absurd.”

The discussion turned to the proper way to increase the budget on the town meeting floor, and the proper way for teachers to advocate for support.

Superintendent of Schools Terrance Ingano said there is no account in the town budget where the $1 million could be taken from, and reminded those in the room that, last summer, the schools advocated for a $600,000 Proposition 2-1/2 override, which passed at the town meeting, but was soundly defeated at the polls.

Kindergarten teacher Maureen Friedrich said someone needs to come forward to help.

“We are bleeding and they are doing surgery to make it worse,” Friedrich said.

“I would feel guilty if I did not get up (at town meeting) and ask,” Ebstein said.

The town meeting is June 4.
