Importance of Voting

In his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln called democracy “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” It means that we are not here to serve our government, but that our government is here to serve us — and we have the right to decide who will represent us and how we want to be represented. It means that we have one of the greatest rights any free people can have: the right to vote.

Clinton Town meeting sees strong showing

Town positions to remain elected

John Lent of Lorraine Avenue moved to take Article 34 out of order to lead the push against the amendment of administrative bylaws to read “appointed by the Board of Selectmen” in the place of “elected by town voters” for the position of town solicitor.

“Presently, the town of Clinton is the only community in the state that has an elected solicitor,” said Dennis Parker of South Meadow Road.

“This has been an elected position for approximately 90 years,” said Robert Gibbons, the current town solicitor. “If Clinton is the only town that has an elected solicitor, I think Clinton is the only town that has it right.”

Former town solicitor Dennis Sargent seconded Gibbons’ sentiment saying the solicitor often has to make difficult decisions that could be compromised by their reliance on the Board of Selectmen for appointment. He also said that appointed solicitors would cost the town more than elected solicitors.

Residents said no to Article 34 and proceeded to vote down Articles 24, 25, and 27, attempts to change the elected positions of assessor, treasurer and tax collector, respectively, to appointed positions.

“What we are attempting to do is create a financial management team in the town of Clinton that is accountable and professional,” said Connolly. “This isn’t an anti-democratic thing, this is a professional thing.”

Articles 26 and 28 were tabled as a result of the aforementioned votes as they were amendments to the Administrative by-laws to remove the word “elected” and insert “shall be appointed by the Board of Selectmen” for the positions of Treasurer and Collector respectively.
